At Your Service: Threats to Congress Increased by Almost 60% Last Year

Earlier this year, the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) announced that it investigated 14,938 concerning statements, behaviors, and communications directed towards Members of Congress, their families, their staff, and the Capitol complex in 2025. That’s a 58% increase in violent threats to our federal legislature from the year prior when USCP investigated 9,474 such incidents.

Violent threats to public servants continue rising nationwide, at all levels of government, across party and ideological lines (including threats to those serving in a nonpartisan capacity, such as in the military). Contextualizing this violence with USCP’s updated threat data importantly contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the threat landscape.
